Driving from Yerevan to Tbilisi (and beyond) is a popular trip, but you can't just point the car north and go. Crossing into Georgia in a rental needs the supplier's permission and the right insurance, arranged in advance.
Permission and the green card
Not every supplier allows their cars to leave Armenia, so confirm cross-border travel is permitted before you book. You'll also need a 'green card' — international motor insurance valid in Georgia — which the supplier arranges for an extra fee. Standard Armenian rental insurance does not cover you abroad.
The crossing and one-way options
The main route uses the Bagratashen–Sadakhlo border crossing, roughly 5–6 hours from Yerevan toward Tbilisi. Carry all documents (license/IDP, passport, rental papers, green card). Some travelers prefer a one-way rental — pick up in Yerevan, drop off in Tbilisi — or simply rent separately in each country to avoid the paperwork.
