Lake Sevan is one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, sitting at 1,900 m above sea level about an hour east of Yerevan. The blue expanse ringed by bare mountains is startling after the Ararat Plain. Drive up to the Sevanavank peninsula for the twin medieval churches and sweeping lake views, then follow the shore to find beaches, barbecue spots and restaurants serving the lake's famous ishkhan trout and sig. A standard hatchback or sedan handles the M4 highway perfectly.
Trip highlights
- Sevanavank Monastery on its rocky peninsula — views in every direction
- Swimming beaches and pedal boats along the northern shore in summer
- Fresh-caught sig and ishkhan trout at lakeside restaurants
- Gateway to Dilijan National Park another 35 km north
Driving tips
Visit outside peak summer
July and August bring crowds and pricier accommodation. May–June and September offer calmer water, cooler weather and far fewer visitors.
Yerevan to Lake Sevan FAQs
About 65 km east on the M4 highway — roughly one hour. A sedan or economy car is fine; the road is one of Armenia's best. Sevanavank Monastery is right at the lake's edge and well-signposted.
