Khndzoresk is one of Armenia's most theatrical landscapes — an abandoned cave village cut into a deep ravine near Goris in the Syunik region. Hundreds of cave dwellings pock the cliff faces, and a dramatic swinging footbridge, 160 m long, arcs across the gorge. Like Tatev (just 30 km away), this is a deep-south destination best treated as an overnight trip from Yerevan: 250 km and about 4 hours each way through spectacular mountain scenery. Base yourself in the pleasant town of Goris and combine both sites. An SUV is recommended for mountain sections and for the unpaved access track to the cave village.

Trip highlights

  • 160 m swinging footbridge across the Khndzoresk ravine
  • Hundreds of cave dwellings carved into soft volcanic tuff
  • Panoramic views over the Syunik plateau
  • Natural overnight pairing with Tatev Monastery and Goris

Driving tips

Base in Goris for the south

Goris is the regional hub for Khndzoresk and Tatev — comfortable guesthouses, restaurants and a good fuel station. Staying one or two nights lets you visit both sites without the pressure of a same-day return to Yerevan.
