The Garni–Geghard loop is Armenia's most iconic short drive — barely 40 km from Yerevan yet utterly transporting. You'll wind through the dramatic Azat River gorge to reach Garni, Armenia's only standing Hellenistic temple, then continue a few kilometres to Geghard, a medieval monastery carved directly into the clifface and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. An economy car handles the paved roads with ease, making this the ideal first trip for any visitor to Armenia.

Trip highlights

  • Garni Temple — the only intact Greco-Roman colonnade in Armenia
  • Geghard Monastery — church chambers hewn from living rock, UNESCO listed
  • Azat River gorge scenery and roadside churchkhela and honey stalls
  • Combines easily with a Yerevan morning or a Khor Virap afternoon

Driving tips

Go on a weekday morning

Geghard draws large tour-bus groups by mid-morning on weekends. Arriving before 10 am gives you near-solitude in the rock chambers and better photography light.

Bring cash for the road

Vendors along the gorge road sell lavash, honey and churchkhela. Card readers are rare — a few hundred dram goes a long way.
