The Debed Canyon in Lori, Armenia's northernmost marz, holds two of the country's greatest architectural treasures: Haghpat and Sanahin, twin medieval monasteries that together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The drive north from Yerevan passes through increasingly dramatic gorge scenery as the road drops into the deep canyon. The route is paved throughout but winding; an SUV is more comfortable and gives you flexibility to explore village tracks in the area. This is one of Armenia's most rewarding full-day drives — combine it with the copper-mining town of Alaverdi for a complete northern experience.
Trip highlights

- Sanahin Monastery — adjacent UNESCO site with extraordinary khachkar collection
