Armenia is one of the world's oldest wine-making regions, and Areni village in Vayots Dzor is its heartland. The Areni-1 cave complex, discovered nearby, contained a 6,000-year-old winery — the oldest known in the world — as well as the world's oldest leather shoe. Today the village is lined with family wineries producing the indigenous Areni Noir grape. The scenic drive from Yerevan follows the Arpa River through increasingly beautiful canyon country. Any car does the job; just ensure you have a designated driver for the tastings.
